Tools and Equipment / Extruder Recommendation
« on: January 13, 2016, 03:10:00 PM »
We are considering an extruder for our pottery school. We have all ages working in the studio, so something easy to work/clean for all levels of students.

It does not have to be pretty to perform well! I think it's great

Pottery Pictures / Re: Throwing from standing position
« on: November 17, 2015, 02:05:25 PM »
Glad to see you made some use of your chemistry and biology texts! (LOL!!!) On the serious side, you are correct about finding the body position most comfortable for you. I throw sitting, but my chair is lower in the front so that I do not bend as much in the waist. Standing was just too aggravating. I can't get tall pots pulled.

Porcelain is what porcelain wants to do.........I've had pots make it all the way to the glaze fire, then crack. I've had porcelain fire in a wood fire and come out better than any of the other clays. Persnickety stuff. But we love the outcome.

Looking for a used, large oval electric kiln. Elements and electrical system can be in bad shape, but the bricks should be in fairly good condition. Virginia or surrounding area please.

Wood fire glazes wanted! I have been invited to fire some pieces in a wood fire kiln. I have porcelain as well as a groggy clay specifically made for wood firing. Anyone our there have a favorite?

We have mild winters here in Virginia for the most part so I hAve an advantage. I am doing a lot of experimenting this year . I love SA Hill's techniques, but need to find my own niche. Hope your fall is filled with lots of pots!

I spray my glazes, so they are a little on the thin side. I have never had an issue with crazing. John Post has an extensive collection of test tiles on line including Jenn's juicy fruit.

Sunday, Sept. 13th class is full. There are still a few spaces for Saturday, Sept. 12th.

It's a pretty good size. I started with 5 pounds of clay. Initially it was about 21 inches tall, but after the one fire, it finished not quite 18 inches. I use Coleman's 10 porcelain and fire to a high cone 7, almost cone 8 in an electric kiln. I have heard mixed results with using porcelain for raku but personally I like to experiment.

Ray that would be awesome! And in your "free time", how about something on saggar? I have never done either pit firings or saggar even though I love the pots that I have seen.

Great pieces Ray! I am pretty new to pottery having been at it for 3 years now. Sagger pots absolutely intrigue me.

Glazes / Glazing / Re: Pinholes are everywhere!
« on: August 10, 2015, 09:38:00 PM »
Sometimes there is a compatibility issue between clay bodies and glazes. I have tried bisquing at higher temps to prevent the outgasing that sometimes create pinholes. After testing several different clay bodies with many different glazes, I was able to lower the odds of having pinholes.
